REVISION EXPANDS INTEGRATED SOLDIER SYSTEM CAPABILITY THROUGH ACQUISITION OF POWER MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY COMPANY

Montreal, QC (February 25, 2014) – Revision Military, a world leader in protective soldier solutions, has expanded its capabilities by adding power management to its roster of integrated technologies, through the acquisition of Panacis, an Ottawa-based company focusing on Lithium ion rechargeable energy storage systems.

Advanced, electronic battlefield equipment such as networked radios, night-vision systems, GPS, smart phones and laptops, while increasing situational awareness and capability within smaller units, comes with the challenge of sustaining power for these devices, ideally without the weight and complexity that numerous types of batteries present.

Panacis Receives Patent For Improved Lithium Battery Safety

Application ideal for electric vehicles, aircraft, and military systems

Ottawa, ON, 27 August 2013 Panacis Inc. is pleased to announce that the U.S. Patent Office has granted Panacis a patent for a Battery Connection Failure Detection System, patent number 8,427,171B2.  Panacis’ experience with high power battery systems in the areas of aerospace, engine starting, and ground vehicles led to the development of a way to detect if the electrical connections internal to the battery were secure.

Steve Carkner, Founder and Chief Technology Officer, explains that, “A significant number of industry battery safety issues have been traced to poor or damaged connections internal to the battery. Conventional battery management systems only measure the temperature of the cells within the battery but ignore other areas of potential failure. This patent recognizes the unique nature of Panacis’ measurement technique for detecting the degradation of connection points within the battery long before they become a safety issue.”

Panacis and Solace Power Collaborate for Soldier System Power

Companies combine advanced energy storage and wireless power technologies

GOVERNMENT OF CANADA SUPPORTS NEW BATTERY SYSTEM IN OTTAWA

Ottawa, Ontario, 23 April 2013 — Thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada, Ottawa-based Panacis Inc. will be able to accelerate the commercialization of a new lithium-ion battery system targeting the defence market. The investment was announced today by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).

“By investing in Panacis Inc.’s new battery system, we are helping to ensure that soldiers have the resources they need to effectively protect people and goods,” said Minister Goodyear. “Our government’s support for innovations like these helps to foster competitiveness and creates opportunities for jobs and growth here in Ottawa.”

Under FedDev Ontario’s Investing in Business Innovation initiative, Panacis will receive up to $613,457 to accelerate the commercialization of the Soldier Sharepack™, a wearable energy storage system. The system is both a battery and an energy management device that uses flexible energy sharing, harvesting and scavenging techniques that allow a user’s movement and renewable sources such as solar to supplement the battery charge and provide reliable power.

FedDev Ontario’s investment has also enabled Panacis to attract private investment of up to $1,226,916 from members of the Capital Angel Network.

This investment will help the company commercialize the Soldier Sharepack™ and increase the scale of its manufacturing operations in Ontario. It is expected that the project will create up to 15 full-time jobs in the Ottawa area.

Panacis Receives Patent that Improves Performance and Extends Life of Lithium Batteries at High Temperatures

Patented technology gives Panacis a competitive edge in developing military battery systems

Ottawa, ON, November 21, 2012 – The U.S. Patent Office has granted Panacis Inc. a patent that improves rechargeable battery operation and cycle life at high ambient temperatures, a challenge for high energy density lithium ion cells.  The proprietary technology involves a complex algorithm in the Battery Management System (BMS) that dynamically adjusts certain parameters in response to cell temperature.

To date, Panacis’ preliminary testing has shown a lifetime increase from 4 months to more than 19 months for a battery exposed to temperatures of +55C.

“The ability both to operate efficiently at high temperatures and to extend the battery’s life at these temperatures is critical for our military markets,” said Steve Carkner, inventor, founder, and CTO of Panacis.  “It is particularly applicable for our soldier system and ground vehicle applications.”

Panacis utilizes its own in-house, proprietary BMS in its products. This allows custom tailoring of the battery and also allows innovations to be deployed easily, sometimes by simply updating the battery’s software.

“Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) battery management systems are fine for toys and consumer gadgets, but they lack the flexibility to tackle the serious energy storage needs of our military and industrial clients,” added Mr. Carkner.

This patented technology is also relevant to other applications such as electric vehicles.  Extending the life of lithium batteries under extreme temperatures could reduce or even eliminate the need for cooling on electric vehicles. This would in turn reduce battery pack cost, size, and weight resulting in vehicles that can go farther on a single charge.

Multi-Passenger Electric Aircraft Takes Flight – Powered by Panacis

Successful Completion of Flight Tests Marks Major Milestone

Ottawa, Ontario, October 17, 2012Panacis is pleased to announce that a fully electric Cessna 172 has successfully flown multiple times powered by Panacis’ advanced lithium batteries. The aircraft, designed by Colorado-based Beyond Aviation has been undergoing ground testing and short hop flights for almost a year with increasing range and altitude testing culminating in the recent completion of the entire test plan.

“The battery system was delivered more than a year ago to support this program and has been used in their lab tests and all runway tests,” stated Steve Carkner, founder and CTO of Panacis. “The same batteries are still operating the aircraft; we have had no significant issues with the battery system and have seen no degradation in capacity or performance over this long test cycle.”

Airborne electric vehicles represent the most challenging environment for energy storage due to the increased need for reliability and lower weight, when compared to the simpler systems employed in electric cars. The power profile of electric aircraft is also more challenging than electric cars due to the extreme temperature variations as the aircraft climbs and the high power requirements during takeoff. The flight testing of the Cessna 172 demonstrates Panacis’ ability to deliver the lightest high power battery systems in a production ready format for applications where weight is critical.

The use of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) is one of the fastest growing segments of the U.S. Military with an estimated 12% annual growth projected to reach more than $18B in 2018 according to the U.S. Military Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) Market Forecast 2013-2018. Ottawa, ON, October 1, 2012 – Panacis, in partnership with Carleton University, has been awarded a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Engage Grant to conduct research in the use of patent pending flexible gel films in managing thermal runaway in lithium ion batteries.  As the industry partner Panacis will work with Dr. J. Liu of Carleton’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.  Dr. Liu will undertake studies and tests to assess an innovative barrier approach to improving battery safety by limiting a thermal runaway event and protecting against fire.

Panacis Inc. receives Government of Canada funding support

Firm continues to advance portable energy storage technology in small battery pack energy sharing systems

Ottawa, ON, September 17, 2012 – Panacis received funding from the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) to support research in the company’s energy sharing system for small, portable, rechargeable battery packs.  The funding will help to advance capability in such areas as connection of multiple lithium battery packs regardless of state of charge, state of health or capacity.  This technology supports Panacis’ leadership in providing small portable powerpacks for soldier systems and other mobile applications where size, weight, and energy density are critical.

Panacis Inc. receives production order to support the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Program

Follow-on order for proven marine aviation battery electronics

Ottawa, ON, Sept 10, 2012– Panacis has received a follow-on production order for battery system electronics that support the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program.  The portable powerpack provides ground power to F-35 aircraft that are stationary on the deck of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers.

The portable powerpack operates in extreme military or marine environments and can be safely hot-swapped while standing in up to one inch of JP-8 jet fuel.  Panacis, which designed and built the fully military qualified battery system, has delivered more than 25 JSF powerpacks to U.S.-based partners in the past two years.

Panacis Inc. Secures more than $ 2 million in financing and appoints new CEO

Mark D. Kershey takes the helm to lead company into next phase of growth

Kershey as President and Chief Executive Officer as the company secures $1.5 million in private investment. Panacis Founder Steve Carkner moves into the role of Chief Technology Officer.

Panacis joins IEC 61427-2 Working Group

Ottawa, Ontario – November 14, 2011 – Working under the IEC TC21 Committee for Secondary Cells and Batteries, the IEC 61427-2 Working Group will develop a standard for electrical energy storage in batteries of any chemistry in the range of 10KWhr to 10MWh. This aligns well with the systems already in production at Panacis and will ensure that lessons learned in the production, installation and maintenance of such systems can become common practice.

The IEC working group focus on batteries specifically suited for storing energy from renewable energy sources and from the AC power grid demonstrates a growing understanding in the power generation industry that storing energy for use in peak power shaving, demand time shifting and load leveling will be key factors in the continued adoption of renewable energy sources.


Multiple new orders get Panacis fiscal year off to a good start

Ottawa, Ontario – October 28, 2011 – Just a few weeks into their new fiscal year which begins on October 1, 2011, Panacis is pleased to announce that four U.S. based customers have placed orders for Panacis flagship LoVESS product which allows modular plug-and-play energy storage to be added to military, industrial and off-grid applications. The orders total over 350,000 watt hours and represent the largest production build of batteries by Panacis to date.

“These orders validate the breadth of markets this product can address, the orders represent two military, one portable solar and one industrial application” says Steve Carkner, CEO of Panacis.

One military customer is using the batteries to operate remote communications systems in coastal waters all around the United States. This represents the first follow-on order for the product and is the start of what is expected to be a steady stream of larger military orders in this market niche.

Panacis ships largest energy system to date

Ottawa, Ontario July 4, 2011

Panacis has developed and shipped their largest energy storage system to date. Totalling more than 200,000 watt-hours of storage, the lithium polymer based battery provides modular 48V storage for a U.S. military communication system.

The modular system allows the end user to customize the amount of storage they allocate to any particular site in chunks of about 3,000 watt hours each, enough to power a small home for about a day.

“We are seeing significant interest in this system from other customers in the industrial and telecommunication space, the modular nature of these batteries allows them to be quickly adapted for wide variety of applications” said Steve Carkner, CEO of Panacis.
