Product Design

Design often has the greatest bearing on the production cost of a product. Panacis customers benefit from the breadth of our design capabilities, and from the depth of our experience in bringing them to bear on a range of design challenges.

Electronics Design

Many electronics design approaches depend too much on the use of single-module components that attempt to solve difficult problems with a “one size fits all” approach. This can increase the cost and impair the performance of products. By developing purpose-designed subsystems using discrete components where appropriate, we are able to reduce production costs and increase performance of our customers’ products.

Panacis has deep and proven experience in electronics design, including:

  • analog electronics including control, sense, drive, and protection systems,
  • digital electronics including FPGAs and microcontrollers,
  • low power electronics, optimized for efficiency, and
  • high power electronics, including high voltages and currents.

Panacis-designed electronics systems can be found driving mission-critical aerospace systems, life-saving medical devices, and top-brand consumer products.

Mechanical and Electromechanical Design

It is often the case that mechanical and electronics systems are broken out and designed in isolation, only to create a set of new design challenges during systems integration and production phases. Tight integration of mechanical and electronics systems can allow for simpler, more effective designs that can be made lighter and smaller. With its “whole product” approach, Panacis provides its customers with novel, high-performance designs that are highly cost effective.

Panacis has a breadth of mechanical design capabilities, including:

  • industrial design,
  • enclosures and linkages,
  • selection and use of advanced materials, and
  • electromechanical stack-up and integration.

From the clean, attractive lines of plastic enclosures for consumer devices, to ergonomic sculpted optical medical instruments, or from simple black boxes for the desktop, to rugged environmentally shielded enclosures for use on the runway, Panacis has experience designing the mechanical systems that complement sophisticated technology products.

Software and Firmware

Panacis has software experience that comes from having designed a number of world-class products that have shipped with our code. We understand that software requirements drive component selection, affecting design aspects such as production costs and power budgets.

Our software experience spans:

  • real-time control systems,
  • 8, 16 and 32 bit microcontrollers,
  • use of embedded operating systems such as linux,
  • design of custom embedded operating systems,
  • PC device drivers, and
  • PC control and visualization software.

Our software capabilities have allowed us to design a wireless device that can run for two years on a single AA battery, control systems for sensitive medical diagnostic devices, and protection systems for life-saving battery power systems.

Systems Integration

By considering systems integration issues throughout product development, Panacis is able to minimize design cycles, while reducing costs and time to launch.

Panacis understands how systems perform in real-world scenarios, and can take in to consideration aspects, such as:

  • heat management and dissipation,
  • temperature extremes from desert to arctic tundra,
  • foreign material ingress including water and salt fog, sand and dust,
  • external mechanical forces including shock and vibration,
  • electronic protection from RF interference, electrostatic discharge, and lightning strikes, and
  • electronic emissions for regulatory or RF signature reduction requirements.

Panacis has designed battery packs that could safely withstand lightning strikes, bullet impacts, and the most extreme of operating temperatures.
